Top Things to Do, See, Eat & Explore in Cambria, California

Cambria has been one of my go-to escapes for years. Tucked between pine forests and the Pacific Ocean along Highway 1, this small town has a quiet magic to it—especially when the fog rolls in over Moonstone Beach or the holiday lights go up in December.

I return often, especially in January, when the crowds are gone and the beaches feel like your own. Or in December, when the town glows with lights during the Cambria Christmas Market (a local favorite). Whether I’m walking the boardwalk at Moonstone Beach, watching the waves crash below the bluffs at Fiscalini Ranch, or winding down with dinner at Robin’s Restaurant, Cambria always delivers peace, charm, and that deep-breath-out feeling I crave.

If you’re planning a weekend away, a Highway 1 road trip, or even a base for exploring nearby Morro Bay, San Simeon, or the Big Sur coast, this Cambria travel guide has everything you need—what to do, where to eat, and the best places to stay (including my personal favorite, Fireside Inn on Moonstone Beach).

Why Visit Cambria?

Cambria is where coastal cliffs meet pine-covered hills. It’s one of those rare California towns where you can stroll a misty beach in the morning, hike a forest trail by noon, and sip local wine by the fire at night.

Just a short drive from Hearst Castle and the elephant seal rookery in San Simeon, Cambria is ideally located along Highway 1. It’s also only 30 minutes from Morro Bay (a great stop for kayaking or seafood), and less than 2 hours from Big Sur’s southern reaches. You can pack in a lot—or simply unplug and do nothing at all.

Moonstone Boardwalk

The town itself is split into the East and West Villages, filled with art galleries, antique shops, tasting rooms, and quiet cafes. But it’s the coast that really steals the show. Moonstone Beach, with its driftwood, polished stones, and long boardwalk, is one of my favorite places in California. I come back again and again—especially in winter, when the sunsets are wild and the beach is nearly empty.
