1. Discover Morro Rock

On the top of the list is, of course, to discover Morro Rock. But did you know that Morro Rock was once an active volcano?

Morro Rock is part of a chain of nine ancient volcanic plugs known as The Nine Sisters or Morros. Formed over 22 million years ago, these formations stretch from Morro Bay all the way to Islay Hill near the San Luis Obispo airport.

Standing at 576 feet (176 meters) tall, Morro Rock is the most famous of The Nine Sisters, thanks to its striking presence against the Pacific Ocean. Its dramatic appearance makes it a popular spot for photography, offering stunning views from nearly every vantage point in Morro Bay.

Although climbing Morro Rock is prohibited to protect its natural and cultural significance, you can drive and walk around its base.

This area is a haven for wildlife, including peregrine falcons and other bird species, as well as sea otters and seals, making it a vibrant natural habitat.

Tip: Park directly across from Morro Rock to get a great view of the active sea otter population lounging by the shore. For an extra dose of otter cuteness, visit during the peak pupping seasons from October to January or from March to April.

Dining and shopping along the Morro Bay waterfront is the best way to experience this charming town. Every corner features unique shops, cafes, and waterfront restaurants buzzing with travelers.

In my opinion, the best times to go kayaking or stand up paddle boarding are early morning or late afternoon when the waters are calm and the light is magical. Renting a kayak is easy, with several outfitters along the Embarcadero. I had a great experience with A Kayak Shack conveniently located by the Marina.

Spotting sea otters has always been one of my favorite things to do in Morro Bay. These playful creatures are essential to the bay’s ecosystem and are delightful to watch as they groom and care for their young.

The best places to see them are along the Harbor Walk, which circles the bay from the tall smoke stacks to Morro Rock, and right across from Morro Rock itself, where they frequently swim. Bring binoculars to get a closer look and capture these charming animals in action.

Morro Bay State Park, conveniently located within Morro Bay, is easily accessible for travelers and offers a wealth of natural beauty and outdoor activities.

Entry to the park is free, allowing visitors to explore its stunning coastal bluffs with sweeping ocean views and tranquil woodlands without any cost.

After moving to Morro Bay vicinity, I became fascinated by bird photography, and this town, recognized as an Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society, is a birdwatcher’s paradise. With its diverse habitats including the bay, saltmarsh, woodlands, and dunes, Morro Bay provides exceptional birding opportunities.

A quick, rewarding hike in Morro Bay State Park, Black Hill Trail leads to a volcanic peak with stunning views, especially at sunset. The 0.6-mile round trip includes an easy 190-foot elevation gain, perfect for most hikers. For a shorter route, follow the left trail to the summit, or for a challenge, take the steeper right path.

A gentle 0.7-mile trail along Morro Bay’s edge, ideal for birdwatching and a peaceful coastal walk. Located by the campground, Marina Peninsula Trail is an easy, flat path suitable for all ages, showcasing Morro Bay’s coastal beauty.

A rugged 2.4-mile trail with steep inclines, Cerro Cabrillo is challenging but rewarding, offering expansive views of Morro Bay. Recent rains have added some obstacles, making it best for thrill-seekers. Black Hill is a gentler option, but Cerro Cabrillo is perfect for adventurers.

This 2.9-mile loop provides scenic views of Morro Bay and the Pacific, ideal for casual hikers, runners, and birdwatchers. Easy terrain with some muddy patches after rain, Crespi Trail offers a refreshing escape. For parking, try Turri Rd if the main lot is full.

A 0.7-mile easy trail with views of Morro Rock and the harbor, Windy Cove Trail is peaceful and ideal for birdwatching. For an extended hike, start from the campground lot, take the stairs by Bayside Cafe, and enjoy serene views along the way.

A moderate 1.9-mile round trip, Portola Point Trail begins on Quarry Trail and transitions to Live Oak, winding through oak-lined hills and offering sweeping views of the estuary and Pacific. Great for a morning or afternoon adventure.

This might sound unusual, but seaweed foraging is a must-try adventure. I’ve discovered that it’s an incredible way to connect with nature while exploring the culinary treasures of the ocean.

Coleman Park & Beach is my go-to for launching a kayak and enjoying a seaside picnic. Morro Rock Beach, with its iconic views, is perfect for surfing, morning walks, and catching stunning sunsets. On a perfect day, the reflection of Morro Rock on the water is a photographer’s dream.

I always kick off my adventure with a warm bag of kettle corn from Old West Kettle Korn, dive into the succulent booth, and savor the sight of mouthwatering pastries and cannoli (I might even indulge in a bite or two!). Don’t miss Maria’s booth for some of the freshest fruits and veggies, and keep an eye out for unique finds like gluten-free treats and artisan creations.

Until I moved here, I didn’t realize how many local events Morro Bay hosts throughout the year. There’s always something happening, whether it’s celebrating seafood, music, or the arts. These events are a great way to experience the community’s spirit and unique culture.

Some of my favorites include the Morro Bay Bird Festival in January, Morro Bay Kite Festival in April, Cruisin’ Morro Bay Car Show in May, the Witches and Warlocks Paddle in October, and the Lighted Boat Parade in December. Another must-see at a nearby town is the Cambria Christmas Market, a magical holiday event filled with festive lights, unique gifts, and holiday cheer.
